Overall
- Traffic fatalities decreased nearly 11% from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061 in 2023.
- The 2023 Mileage Death Rate (MDR) – fatalities per 100 million miles traveled – was 1.26, a 6% decrease from 1.34 in 2022.
Alcohol-Impaired Driving
- Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities (fatalities in crashes involving a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration, or BAC, of 0.08 or higher) decreased approximately 4.5% from 1,419 in 2022 to 1,355 in 2023.
Drug-Impaired Driving
- In 2021, 50.3% of all drivers killed in vehicle crashes, who were tested, tested positive for legal and/ or illegal drugs.
Occupant Protection
- Unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities in all seating positions decreased 8.6% from 853 in 2022 to 780 in 2023.
Motorcycle Safety
- Motorcycle fatalities decreased 10.2% from 649 in 2022 to 583 in 2023.
- Motorcyclist deaths from not wearing a helmet decreased approximately 23.3% from 43 in 2022 to 33 in 2023.
Teen Safety
- Teen drivers involved in fatal crashes (age 15-20) decreased approximately 10.1% from 476 in 2022 to 428 in 2023.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
- Pedestrian fatalities decreased approximately 8.8% from 1,213 in 2022 to 1,106 in 2023.
- Bicycle fatalities decreased approximately 20.8% from 183 in 2022 to 145 in 2023.
