SECRETARY MCPEAK ANNOUNCES
$74.2 MILLION IN STATEWIDE TRAFFIC SAFETY GRANTS

Business, Transportation & Housing Agency Secretary Sunne Wright McPeak today announced that $74.2 million in federal traffic safety funds has been awarded to 277 state departments and communities committed to improved traffic safety. The funds – awarded to California by the U.S. Department of Transportation -- will be administered through the Agency’s Office of Traffic Safety.

“Traffic safety practitioners will be provided with the right tools help make our roadways safer for all Californians,” said Secretary McPeak. “These grants will get resources in the hands of safety professionals to help save lives.”

The grants include a largest-ever allocation to cities and counties of $50.3 million, which will fund results-driven programs that combine education, prevention, and enforcement designed to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

Included in today’s announcement is an award of $990,000 to several Los Angeles County hospitals that will fund child safety seat education to caregivers, and, parents of newborns. The grant calls for the distribution of 18,000 child safety and booster seats.

Also included in the announcement is a $750,000 grant to California State University campuses to effect programs designed to reduce alcohol abuse and alcohol-related crashes. Through a series of mini-grants, the funds will promote anti-DUI initiatives created by campus Alcohol Advisory Councils.

In addition, a $625,539 grant to Orange County will establish a DUI Court that is designed to increase accountability of high-risk DUI offenders by requiring them to participate in treatment combined with education, judicial scrutiny and formal supervision.

Today’s announcement includes grants to seven regions of the state so that they may effect their own traffic safety programs.
