GOVERNOR DAVIS AWARDS $13 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANTS TO REDUCE DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE 12/19/2002
Federal Money to Combat California DUIs

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gray Davis today announced 72 federal grants designed to enhance DUI prevention efforts. The funds, totaling $13 million in federal dollars, will be distributed to various law enforcement organizations in California.

"Even one accident due to driving under the influence is one too many," Gov. Davis said. "We must do everything we can to save lives and protect California motorists."

The grants will fund additional education programs, stepped-up DUI checkpoints and patrols, warrant service programs for multiple DUI offenders and under-age drinking enforcement programs, as well as programs designed to reach younger drivers.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will put grant funds to work on two key projects: the Standardized Field Sobriety testing (SFST) instructor program, where CHP officers train local law enforcement in SFST testing techniques; and expansion of the CHP's Designated Driver Program.

Of the $13 million in grants statewide, $445,077 has been allocated to Northern California, $1,134,140 to the Bay Area, $597,664 to the Central Coast, $1,136,905 to Central California, $985,000 to the Inland Empire, $2,227,525 to Los Angeles/Orange counties, $150,000 to the Southern Border region and $6,267,510 in statewide grants.

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will administer the grants through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
