GOVERNOR DAVIS ISSUES $59.2 MILLION IN GRANTS
STATEWIDE TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY
SACRAMENTO Governor Gray Davis today announced the selection of 206 traffic safety grants totaling $59.2 million for cities and counties throughout the state. The newly funded grants, which include emergency medical services, bicycle/pedestrian education programs and driving under the influence prevention outreach, lend support to Governor Davisâ Traffic Congestion Relief Plan, which was introduced earlier this year.
"Traffic safety permeates every aspect of life in our state," Governor Davis said. "Californians rank it as a top quality-of-life concern along with education, crime and environment. Through these innovative, community-oriented and life-saving grants, our communities will be made a safer place in which to live," concluded Governor Davis.
The Office of Traffic Safety will administer the grants through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency to help improve and resolve traffic safety related issues. The $59.2 million includes an $11.8 million pilot program to fund 1,000 community based organizations (CBO) through governmental agencies. The CBO grant programâs goal is to ensure that traffic safety programs are comprehensive and effectively reach out to and impact our stateâs diverse communities. The Office of Traffic Safety CBO outreach program is the largest of any Governorâs Highway Safety Office in the nation and should serve as a blueprint for other states.
Of the $59.2 million in grants, approximately $3.2 million has been allocated to Northern California, $4.4 million to the Bay Area, $6.8 million to the Central Coast, $3.4 million to Central California, $3.9 million to the Inland Empire, $10 million to Los Angeles/Orange Counties, $4.5 million to San Diego/Imperial Counties, and $23 million for multi-regional and statewide programs.
