GOVERNOR DAVIS ISSUES $4.5 MILLION IN GRANTS TO IMPROVE
TRAFFIC SAFETY IN SAN DIEGO AND IMPERIAL COUNTIES
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gray Davis today announced the award of approximately $4.5 million in traffic safety grants for San Diego and Imperial County Communities. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will administer the grants through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency to help improve and resolve traffic safety related issues on area streets and highways.
Programs receiving funding include:
San Diego Police Department's "Drag Net Program" is aimed at reducing the incidence of illegal street racing through innovative educational programs and widespread enforcement.
San Diego State University's "Pay the Price" program utilizes peer to peer outreach and education on the dangers of impaired driving. The project includes training youth to work with community organizations to facilitate group presentations and motivate young people to become involved in local efforts to reduce underaged drinking.
El Centro's Department of Public Works "Pedestrian and Bicycle Collision Reduction Program" will analyze, in-depth, all pedestrian and bicycle crashes to isolate the problem areas, determine the contributing causes, and develop remedial improvements that will lead to crash reduction.
In addition to the San Diego and Imperial County grants, Governor Davis announced the award of 188 other grants across California, totaling $59.2 million statewide.
"Traffic safety permeates every aspect of life in our state. Californians rank it as a top quality-of-life concern along with education, crime and environment. Through these innovative, community-oriented grants, San Diego and Imperial County will be a safer place in which to live," said Governor Davis.
Davis said his statewide goal is to lower California's mileage death rate (MDR) to 1.0 by 2001. California's current MDR of 1.19 is one of the best in the nation. MDR indicates the number of fatalities per 100 million miles driven.
