GOVERNOR DAVIS ISSUES $3.9 MILLION IN GRANTS
TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY IN INLAND EMPIRE
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gray Davis today announced the award of approximately $3.9 million in traffic safety grants for Inland Empire Communities. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will administer the grants through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency to help improve and resolve traffic safety related issues on area streets and highways.
Programs receiving funding include:
Upland Police Department's DUI enforcement and education program is designed to increase the number of DUI arrests by 15 percent in two years by utilizing a team of officers proficient at DUI detection. Chino Hills Police Department's bicycle safety program will work to increase bicycle helmet use among children and to decrease injuries from bicycle involved traffic collisions through education and the distribution of bicycle helmets. In addition, elementary students will participate in traffic safety rodeos to demonstrate safe bicycle and pedestrian safety practices. Hesperia's Fire Rescue Program will fund equipment needed to properly extricate victims from multi-victim car collisions and decrease "on scene time" with critically injured patients.
In addition to the Inland Empire grants, Governor Davis announced the award of 186 other grants across California, totaling $59.2 million statewide.
"Traffic safety permeates every aspect of life in our state. Californians rank it as a top quality-of-life concern along with education, crime and environment. Through these innovative, community-oriented grants, Inland Empire will be a safer place in which to live," said Governor Davis.
Davis said his statewide goal is to lower California's mileage death rate (MDR) to 1.0 by 2001. California's current MDR of 1.19 is one of the best in the nation. MDR indicates the number of fatalities per 100 million miles driven.
