GOVERNOR DAVIS ISSUES $3.4 MILLION IN GRANTS
TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gray Davis today announced the award of approximately $3.4 million in traffic safety grants for Central California Communities. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will administer the grants through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency to help improve and resolve traffic safety related issues on area streets and highways.

Programs receiving funding include:

Fresno Police Department's DUI public awareness program will include DUI checkpoints and work with community based organizations to conduct 40 DUI education presentations.

Visalia Police Department's program will target aggressive drivers by providing funding for personnel to increase identification and enforcement visibility. This program will also conduct monthly sobriety checkpoints to increase DUI awareness.

Delta Fire Protection District's program will receive funding to purchase a rescue vehicle and extrication equipment. This program will improve emergency response to motor vehicle collisions on Interstate 5 and Highway 12.

In addition to the Central California grants, Governor Davis announced the award of 176 other grants across California, totaling $59.2 million statewide.

"Traffic safety permeates every aspect of life in our state. Californians rank it as a top quality-of-life concern along with education, crime and environment. Through these innovative, community-oriented grants, Central California will be a safer place in which to live," said Governor Davis.

Davis said his statewide goal is to lower California's mileage death rate (MDR) to 1.0 by 2001. California's current MDR of 1.19 is one of the best in the nation. MDR indicates the number of fatalities per 100 million miles driven.
