GOVERNOR DAVIS ISSUES $4.4 MILLION IN GRANTS
TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY IN CENTRAL COAST
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gray Davis today announced the award of approximately $6.8 million in traffic safety grants for Central Coast Communities. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will administer the grants through the Business, Transportation & Housing Agency to help improve and resolve traffic safety related issues on area streets and highways.
Programs receiving funding include:
Santa Barbara County's Department of Public Works will purchase two visible display radar trailers and establish a "Speed Zone Committee" to increase awareness about the dangers of speeding. The radar trailers will be used in 40 locations as part of the public education program.
Monterey Health Department's coordination and oversight of 50 community-based grants aimed at increasing awareness amongst specific target audiences of correct child safety use, seat belt use, bike safety, pedestrian safety and the dangers of impaired driving in cities within Monterey County.
Scotts Valley Fire Protection District will receive funds to purchase rescue and medical equipment to be placed on a new engine company housed and staffed at a new fire station on Glennwood Drive in Scotts Valley. The engine and equipment will respond to incidents on Highway 17, which will reduce emergency response times and therefore, reduce traffic congestion.
In addition to the Central Coast grants, Governor Davis announced the award of 186 other grants across California, totaling $59.2 million statewide.
"Traffic safety permeates every aspect of life in our state. Californians rank it as a top quality-of-life concern along with education, crime and environment. Through these innovative, community-oriented grants, the Bay Area will be a safer place in which to live," said Governor Davis.
Davis said his statewide goal is to lower California's mileage death rate (MDR) to 1.0 by 2001. California's current MDR of 1.19 is one of the best in the nation. MDR indicates the number of fatalities per 100 million miles driven.
