GOVERNOR DAVIS ISSUES $4.4 MILLION IN GRANTS
TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY IN BAY AREA

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gray Davis today announced the award of approximately $4.4 million in traffic safety grants for Bay Area Communities. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will administer the grants through the Business, Transportation & Housing Agency to help improve and resolve traffic safety related issues on area streets and highways.

Programs receiving funding include:

Crockett-Carquinez Fire Protection District's will receive funds to purchase extrication equipment to respond to a greater need for emergency response to auto crashes. The new equipment provides the tools needed to deal with the current hazards related to bridgework.

Walnut Creek's "Nurses and COPS Caring for Contra Costa Children" program seeks to increase seat belt compliance in children and teens and reduce teen-involved DUI crashes. The program is a collaboration between law enforcement, health care and community-based organizations.

Oakland's Community Based Organization (CBO) program will fund CBOs to implement creative traffic solutions within their communities focusing on pedestrian, bicycle and child passenger safety.

In addition to the Northern California grants, Governor Davis announced the award of 172 other grants across California, totaling $59.2 million statewide.

In addition to the Bay Area grants, Governor Davis announced the award of 173 other grants across California, totaling $59.2 million statewide.

"Traffic safety permeates every aspect of life in our state. Californians rank it as a top quality-of-life concern along with education, crime and environment. Through these innovative, community-oriented grants, the Bay Area will be a safer place in which to live," said Governor Davis.

Davis said his statewide goal is to lower California's mileage death rate (MDR) to 1.0 by 2001. California's current MDR of 1.19 is one of the best in the nation. MDR indicates the number of fatalities per 100 million miles driven.
